Land Ahoy

Beachcombers

Ahoy there Year 2 Landlubbers!

Are ye ready to climb aboard the Good Ship Year 2 as we set course for Summer Term? We will hope to avoid those choppy waters towards Year 3 by finding out all about what life is like near to the sea. Navigating the most famous ocean explorers will also allow us to increase our nautical knowledge of what characteristics are required to be that leader and pioneer.  Did someone say the beach? Well, it would be rude not to put our sea shanties to good use on a visit to the seaside.

Buckets and spades packed? Then let's set sail!

Maths

The first week back after the break presented Mr P with a dilemma: start a new area of learning for 3 days or offer us some challenging yet engaging problems to solve to reinforce our understanding of fractions? He opted for the latter. For the remainder of the term with Mr Proctor we will be working on the concept of time, reminding ourselves of o’clock and half past and then introducing new ideas to deal with quarter past and quarter to as well discussing the concept of 5 minute intervals. Adults you have been warned that clocks and “what time is it Mr Wolf” might be a staple diet for the rest of the term. Oh, and Mr P apologises in advance if we come home asking to listen to the Rocky Horror classic The Time Warp in a few weeks. He promises it is all in the name of learning! In Mrs Mitchell’s maths sessions we will be looking at the collection and handling of data through statistics.

English

The first week back will again see us actually completing the final week’s worth of writing on our recent unit of work around Tidy by Emily Gravett. The children have loved this text, and it has helped us remember the sheer beauty of nature and the importance of looking after our earth and surrounding environments. From Week 2 onwards we attack a text written by one if not the most famous writer in the world. William Shakespeare’s The Tempest (well, an abridged version at least!) will be our quality text of study up until the end of the school year. Although this promises to be challenging and eye-opening, it will also allow for the children to really test themselves with language and ideas they will not be quite as familiar with. Let’s hope it’s certainly not double double toil and trouble!

Phonics and Spelling

We start the year continuing through the Sounds-Write SSP, focusing on those sounds we needed to reinforce following on from the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check and any gaps in our learning. During the autumn term, a challenging 'Country' reading text is studied daily to go alongside our reinforcement phonics sessions. This is sent home every week.

At the end of the autumn term, we complete benchmark assessments and are assigned a colour-coded text that is matched to our general reading ability. These texts can be fiction or non-fiction and should present us with both a mixture of prose that we can read with fluency but also elements that test our ability to segment and blend. Assessments for progression onto next colours take place throughout the remainder of the year.

A weekly Reading for Pleasure text is selected and taken home on a weekly basis, and following on from the end of the Country challenging reads, in the spring term a weekly comprehension extract based on current learning topics is set weekly.
