Weaverham Forest Primary School and Nursery

Design & Technology

At Weaverham Forest Primary School our design and technology curriculum teaches children how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. They will to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. At Weaverham Forest, we aim to enable children to understand how design and technology can impact the world by linking their learning to famous designers and engineers.

Through the curriculum, children should be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real life purpose. All teaching of design and technology should follow the design, make and evaluate cycle, alongside the teaching of the appropriate technical knowledge for the unit. Children should be given a variety of tools and materials to choose freely from, and they should evaluate products against a design criteria. All children have a sketch book which they can use to document the process and their planning.

Each year group aims to produce 3 units of design and technology during the year, and teaching and learning aims show a build-up of skills, leading up to a final product that can be showcased in school.

Children learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative and use their creativity to solve real life problems. Children will be able to use cross curricular links to help them to design and make products with a real purpose.

DT will be displayed around classrooms where possible as well as in their best books to allow the children to celebrate their achievements. Links from out side school will help children to identify where this skills can be used in the real world giving them ambitions for the future.
