Phonics Screening Check

The Phonics Screening Check is a short, one-to-one activity that helps us see how well your child can use phonics to read words. During the check, your child will be asked to read a list of words out loud to their teacher – some are real words and some are made-up, so the focus is on sounding them out rather than remembering them. It usually takes only a few minutes and is done in a familiar, supportive setting so children feel at ease. In 2026, all Year 1 children will take the check during week commencing Monday 8th June, and if a child doesn’t quite meet the expected level, they’ll have another chance in Year 2.

Homework

Whilst homework is not formally set as such in Year 1, it is expected that all children read at least 5 times a week (mixture of weekly phonics text and reading for pleasure book) with an adult and log what they have read on Boom Reader. Early reading throughout the year is extremely important, as is hearing others read to them. Reading quality stories to children not only introduces them to a wide range of vocabulary but supports their communication and language skills. The natural conversations that arise when sharing books also develop children's understanding and comprehension skills and can foster a love of reading later in life.

Additionally Spelling Shed & Teach Your Monster APPs will have new tasks assigned each Friday that will reinforce the work in phonics and maths each week.

Other Useful Information

On the days that children have PE, they will come in wearing their full PE .  This allows us to be flexible according to the weather, however, we will aim to complete sessions on a Monday and a Thursday.

Knowledge organisers will be available to view every term on this webpage.
