Year 2 Forest Schools Session 3

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 2 Year: 2015 - 2016

In a change to routine this afternoon we got to witness the glorious Winter sun and also enjoyed the creatures that had also come out for a view.

We used Simon's collecting pots, magnifiers and prisms to really get up close to the bugs with some surprising findings:

*A centipede with 40 pairs of legs!

*A snail with a mite constantly running across its face and body.

*A ladybird with a brown body and cream spots!

As an extra task we used a database website to try and find out the exact name of the centipede and by asking and answering specific questions we found out its name is Western Cream Centipede but that its scientific name is Stigmato Gasta Subterrain. It is also the longest living (size) centipede in England. Strangely it is usually only found in Southern England!

This whole centipede work had us excited and we then played a game where we had to move like one! Thanks goodness we don not have to worry about having up to 75 pairs of legs and feet in real life!

DON'T FORGET: If ever you investigate bugs be sure to handle with care AND replace them to their habitat!
