Igloo Construction

Class: Year 2 Year: 2013 - 2014

Following our request for milk cartons at the start of term, this page is dedicated to showing the progress of the great Weaverham igloo.

Before we talked about the structures, we discussed the words of eskimo and inuit. These words are the names of people who are used to living in frozen conditions but we have to be careful who we call what name (as Canadian people see eskimo as an insult!)

Week 1 (13/01/14): Land found for construction and the work to clear begins. Lots of bottles have already been collected.

Week 2 (20/01/14): Legal wrangles with council with regards to planning permission has set us back a little, but the initial markings have been laid and the work can commence next week! As you can see we have lots of bottles but still need more. Come on year 2, keep drinking milk!!

Week 3 (27/01/14): And we're off...we were thrilled to lay our first cube (bottle) this week and the igloo structure is clear for all to see. A big thank you to Mrs Key for all her hard work but we still need more bottles!

Week 4 (03/02/14): As the end of construction is in sight, we appear to have a few potential residents already lining up to sample the great Weaverham Igloo. Let's have one last final push of bottles this week Weaverham Forest...

Week 5 (10/02/14): After a late flourish of bottles this morning Weaverham Igloo Construction LTD (in association with Mrs Key) is proud to unveil the Weaverham Igloo. Spacious and spherical (almost!), this state of the art structure is one of a kind. As you can see it is already home to an array of Arctic animals and the children will be visiting shortly as part of their role play activities. I had to have a wander in myself and it is fantastic. WELL DONE YEAR 2...

And now...the end is near...sadly along with the Easter break came the end of our work on the Ice topic. This means the world-famous Weaverham Igloo has served its purpose and is surplus to requirements. All Arctic creatures will now need to be re-homed and the igloo has been put up for sale. The hot weather over the Easter break has also resulted in some melting incidents, so the timing is perfect! Rumour has it Reception are interested in purchasing the building but watch this space for more developments!
